Standards and Stumbling Blocks

Romans 14:13, NIV: Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister.
There are those around us who pursue personal happiness within the confines of what the majority in the church consider acceptable. And when they cross a line, we are aghast; wondering why they would ever do such a thing. What we fail to realize is that our current philosophy of Christian living if faulty. Certainly we have condemned certain behaviors as wrong. But, we have condoned other behaviors as acceptable that have no place in Christ's church--behaviors that lead to the behaviors we condemn. For example: Many Christians will watch movies containing nudity and sexual activity, and find no fault in watching such movies. But, when a weaker brother or sister has their fill of godless entertainment and then acts in the same godless manner; then that is when we decide he/she has crossed a line. And whose line have they crossed--God's--or ours? Be certain it is we who have crossed the line by our accepting of standards Christ would not condone, and by allowing ourselves to taste of the world and point fingers at those who taste too much of it (by our standard, not God's). It is we who cross a line when we allow the godless things of the world to seep into the church. And it is we who shall be held accountable for the stumbling blocks we carelessly lay about; that destroy our Christian brothers and sisters.
