2 Timothy 4:3, NIV: For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.

It seems that the world around us is filled with people who gravitate toward those who speak, teach, or “say what their itching ears want to hear.” Even within the church we must contend with such attitudes and the seeping in of worldly philosophy and unsound doctrine. In some congregations, it would seem we present and package to please—careful not to offend—watering down the Word of God in the process. But the Church is not here to promote popular viewpoints, draw crowds, or to entertain in order to keep high attendance. Good intentions or not, nowhere in the Bible will we find that we should use the world’s methods to achieve spiritual goals. God’s “ways are higher...” (Isaiah 55:9). And in His Church, His way is the only way we should be seeking.
