Matthew 26:41, NIV: "Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak."

As the Lord’s darkest hour approached, He asked His disciples to watch with Him, and to pray. Regrettably, they fell asleep when they could have been in prayer together on Jesus’ behalf. Within our futures, there are bound to be days of trouble. We would hope that during those times, others would be in prayer for us. We also hope that in the days of trouble of others, we would be in prayer for them. Regrettably, we are often so consumed by our own concerns that we are in effect sleeping while they suffer. Look around you. Humanity suffers, and we sleep. Lost souls die, and we sleep. The Master is returning soon--and we continue to sleep. We would prefer not to think about it, or perhaps to justify our behavior. And if that is in fact our attitude, we sleep all the more deeply. As Jesus asked once, He continues to ask, “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”
