Hebrews 12:4, NIV: In your struggle against sin, you have not
yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.
This past week, baseball fans were amazed by an incredible catch made by an
outfielder who, while slamming forcibly into the outfield fence, was able to
make the play, and come up with the ball. Yet it was not the catch itself
that had so many in awe, but the discovery that when the fielder had hit the
wall, his nose was broken. And as he fell to the ground, he maintained his grip
on the ball. In our Christian life, it is that kind of tenacity with which
we need to cling to the things of Christówith fierce determinationówithout
regard for personal cost. The scripture tells us that we have not resisted sin
to the point of shedding our blood. Yet we have it within us to persevere in the
things that matter most to usóand in the things of Christ, should we decide to
let Christ matter most of all.
