Matthew 5:3 NIV: Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

It might be said that to be poor in spirit is to look inward at one’s self and with the aid of the Holy Spirit to recognize one’s complete and utter dependency on God. Without Him, we are spiritually bankrupt souls. So why does the Kingdom of Heaven belong to the spiritually poor? As we come to the ends of ourselves, of who we think we are and what we think we can do, it is there we see our need for God. It is there we discover our limitations—and it is there our eyes are finally opened to the riches in glory. It is there we find we are blessed when we take our faith out of what we can do, and trust completely in the work of Christ our Lord.
