Compassion

by Randy Chambers, 2021-12-23

Mark 6:34, NIV: When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.

In order to intercede on another's behalf, compassion is vital. But is compassion for some of us a spiritual gift; while for others, it is a spiritual fruit grown over time and as a result of discipline in the working out of their faith? Perhaps, for some of us, in order to have compassion to intercede, we must first intercede in order to have compassion. Jesus looked at the people and had compassion. He looked at them and He loved them, and He earnestly prayed to the Father for them. First and foremost, if we are to have compassion for others, we must remain in Christ. In fellowship with Him, we find his concerns become ours. For many of us, praying for others can become repetitious and obligatory. But as we look on others through the eyes of Jesus, we too can look on them with compassion--through which we too can intercede in true and Christ-like love.
